Guidelines for Big Eight Newsgroup Creation

November 27th, 2002 by Erich Kolb

These guidelines document the process to create, rename, remove, or change the moderation status of newsgroups in the Big Eight hierarchies (those newsgroups with names starting with comp.*, humanities.*, misc.*, news.*, rec.*, sci.*, soc.*, and talk.*). Proposals under this process must go through a discussion phase, a voting phase, and a verification phase as described below. Read More »

New Jabber Server

November 15th, 2002 by Erich Kolb

Well, I installed a new Jabber Server (and it works too). Right now its pretty basic, as in there are no transports installed. Still working on that. Eventually anyone who connects should be able to use it as a gateway to ICQ/AIM, MSN, YIM, etc. But facing some compile problems with the transports themselves. If you want to use it, the server address is: jabber.kolbsoft.com

Jabber.org

November 12th, 2002 by Erich Kolb

Came across Jabber.org today and finally decided to check it out. There are actually some really good applications out there that let you do AIM, YIM, MSN Messenger, and a bunch more. Finally, I can get rid of some of the software on my computer.

Create a new usenet newsgroup?

November 9th, 2002 by Erich Kolb

After searching to no end, I have discovered that there really are no usenet groups dedicated to WebLogging. Therefore, I am going to take it upon myself to try and start one or more usenet newsgroups devoted to the weblog community. I will try to keep everyone posted on the steps I am taking to do this. Please let me know what you think!

Root Zones have changed!

November 7th, 2002 by Erich Kolb

The day before yesterday the root zone was silently changed for the first time in 5 years. The change was to J.ROOT-SERVERS.NET that is now managed by Verisign. The usual sites don’t breathe a word about this change however as one would expect for such a change to be properly announced. An interesing sidenote is this thread on the IETF discussion list.” the_proton writes “The server j.root-servers.net has changed IP address to 192.58.128.30. The new root zone hints can be grabbed from ftp://rs.internic.net/domain/named.root or ftp://ftp.internic.net/domain/named.root. The new zone serial number is 2002110501

PHPDiscuss.com

November 6th, 2002 by Erich Kolb

As some of you know PHPDiscuss.com has been running a modified version of Florian Amrhein’s Newsportal for the past couple of months now. This has provided an awesome frontend to PHP.net’s Mailing Lists/Usenet Newsgroups. This is going to change soon. The way that the articles are posted is not the most effecient, plus I want to add some searching capabilities. Let me know if you have any other suggestions.
